Does Sugar Cause Acne?
You like the sweeties? Irresistibly sweet, but what if that’s what makes your face irresistible to Acne?
Let me show you how.
There are two main factors behind sugar and acnes – Hormones and inflammation
Hormones overdrive the skin glands, and it leads to excessive sebum production and a combination of sebum and blocked skin cells are the perfect recipes for a breakout, and that leads to hormonal acnes.
Another high factor risk caused by the high sugar diet is Inflammation. When you eat high glycemic foods – sugar or any other food that converts to sugar rapidly, whether an apple or a yummy piece of cake.
Your insulin level rises because the body breaks down these carbohydrates into glucose. And a pike in the insulin level, leads to what is known as inflammation.
Inflammation causes the skin to sag because it produces enzymes that break down collagen and elastin which are the hormones responsible for a fresh looking and soft skin. When this happens the skin loses elasticity and looks dull.
Through a process known as glycation, digested sugar attaches itself permanently to the collagen in the skin. This increases the body’s rate of aging and can also worsen skin conditions like acne and rosacea.
Advice; avoid foods rich in saturated fats and the ones that contain simple sugar like white bread, ice cream, candy, packaged snacks and soda, pizza, cream cheese, fried foods, ketchup, pasta, sugar both white and brown. These simple carbohydrate foods causes the insulin level to increase and leads to what is called a burst of inflammation.
Eat complex carbohydrates eg, vegetables and brown rice. They take longer to be converted to glucose and as such does not increase the insulin levels. Low glycemic foods like nuts, whole grains, and beans and also all other fibrous foods, delay sugar absorption.
An anti-inflammatory diet of lean proteins (salmons), antioxidants like berries ,fiber like collards and spinach, then healthy fats like avocado and olive oil, will get you that healthy glowing skin that you want.
So if you ask whether Sugar causes acne, the answer is a big YES.
So take my advice, Cut off some sugar,,
Eat diets rich in complex carbohydrates, and as much as possible make it balanced . A low glycemic and high protein food is your sure bet, as it will help keep your blood sugar level consistent.
Hit the sheets quite often, don’t let your body get stressed out. The body releases cortisol, which is a stress hormone and it causes your insulin level to spike because it mobilizes already stored sugar in the body.
Let there be some fat on the plate, healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids, help keep the skin radiant, soft and supple.
